The wine cellar tour: six written reviews, and the cellar is not the one under the palace
What six people wrote
They wrote about the owners. Martina is named in two of the six, once as the proprietor leading the tour herself, and a third review is about the winery owner plainly enjoying his job. The tastings come up as generous rather than measured, and one group was asked at the start which kinds of wine they preferred.
Immer wieder gerne. Sehr empfehlenswert”
“We Really enjoyed this tour. It was a small group with lots of wine samples, knowledge & giggles! Thanks for a wonderful day! 🥂”
Twenty ratings, and why the average is not the story
Twenty people is a small sample, and 4.9 out of twenty is closer to unanimous than to proven. What makes this listing readable anyway is that six of the twenty wrote something, and the six agree with each other in detail: the same names, the same informality, the same generous pours. Six independent descriptions that match are worth more than a decimal place.
Two of them are worth reading against the listing rather than with it. Brandy calls it a small group; Johannes turned up with fourteen people. Both can be true of different departures, and neither is promised anywhere on the listing.
The cellar under the palace is a different place
The Staatlicher Hofkeller lies inside the Residence, in the corridors of the former prince-bishop’s court cellar: 4,557 square metres of it, 891 metres of corridor, built because Balthasar Neumann was asked for an excellent wine cellar. The estate runs its own tours and tastings and publishes the dates on its own site. Nothing on GetYourGuide goes there, this listing included. That is set out plainly on the cellar under the palace, and it is the single most confused point on this whole subject.
What works
- Six written reviews out of twenty ratings, an unusually high proportion here
- The owners are named and described in most of them
- Tastings reported as generous, with preferences asked at the start
- Wine can be bought on the spot afterwards, according to one reviewer
Worth knowing
- This is a town winery, not the Staatlicher Hofkeller under the Residence
- Twenty ratings is a small sample however high the average
- Group size varies: one reviewer says small, another came with fourteen
- Nothing here includes entry to the palace

The vineyard day is at the same family winery and is priced for a whole group rather than per person; it is reviewed here. The old town walk ends with three glasses on the bridge instead of in a cellar, and it is reviewed here.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a tour of the wine cellar under the Würzburg Residence?
No. It is a family winery in the town. The Staatlicher Hofkeller, the state cellar under the Residence, runs its own tours and tastings and publishes them on its own site; nothing sold on GetYourGuide goes there. The difference is explained on the cellar under the palace.
How many wines do you taste?
Three — the listing calls it a trio tasting, with water and bread, and two reviewers confirm three pours. One describes them as generous and says the group was asked at the start which styles they preferred.
Is 4.9 from twenty ratings reliable?
It is a very high average on a very small sample, which is not the same as a proven one. What makes this listing readable is that six of the twenty wrote something and the six describe the same thing. Treat the words as the evidence and the decimal place as decoration.
